Oxford, Virtually

I‘d spotted a coach day trip to the City of Oxford and as we had wanted to visit this place together, I booked it up. I’d been here many times in the old days. The first time was in 1966. Although not the first time, I’d been there, three of us were staying on at college that weekend and went into Oxford for the day. The college was out in the sticks near Witney and we were not getting much news out there. I somehow managed to forget that the 1966 World Cup Final was on that day.🤯. In the end, we sat in Robinson Rentals all afternoon, with the manager’s permission, and watched the game.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Anyway, we got here at noon and had five hours wandering. Needless to say, I had a few caches lined up. They were virtuals, all part of the University Challenge series. #7 (sizzle sizzle) is based on Protestant Martyrs burnt at the stake. #8 (brmm brm) is based on William Morris who started the car industry here and #10 (stomp stomp) based on dinosaurs whose remains were found locally.

Some of the rest of the afternoon was spent in the Turf Tavern, a previous haunt of mine in the old days and more recently, Inspector Morse, the television detective played by John Thaw. Although Endeavour and his sergeants drank in many of the local pubs, it is shown that the Turf was his favourite.🍺
