As usual, I’m heading down in to Kent early doors at the weekend. The plan today is to mop up some more of the stragglers around Meopham. This time I was going to start at the front of the Nash Street Bash series and see how it goes. I had to park right down the road from #01 and walk up.
This is a trad, mult, trad, multi series and I soon worked my way up to #09. However, I bombed out at #10. I worked out the multi and got to GZ but couldn’t find the cache.🙁 I re-traced my steps back across the field and walked up to CM Ifield for a quick find of the well placed trad. I checked the memorial in front of the church and found the name of Acting Captain, Thomas Colyer-Fergusson VC.
A little bit of research showed that he lived locally and was awarded his medal for most conspicuous bravery on two occasions on 31st July 1917 at Bellewaarde, Belgium. He was killed in action later that day. He was 21 years of age. He is buried at the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ypres.
After paying my respects to the fallen, I had a good mile wall back to the car. I added the VS Meopham and CM Hook Green (St Paul’s) multis to the day’s tally and drove down to the CM Meopham. I had had this Earthcache on my list for ages and glad that I was finally going to tackle it.😀
This was to be my last cache of the day. I got here and the bells were ringing. I poked my head around the church door and the pianist was practicing his music. I went to check what time the service started and I had 30 mins to play with. I went back and into the church and bumped into the lady vicar. I asked if I could explore the church before the service and she said “by all means, be my guest.”😀
I wandered around trying to get the answers to all the COs questions. I must admit that I had expected something else of Ragstone and when I saw the pillars, I thought that it was Portland Stone.🤣
