I suppose that the Church Micro series is probably my favourite series although I’m very keen on many others. Today is its anniversary and by finding a CM cache, a souvenir is awarded but by attending an CM Anniversary event, you can gain another. Now these events are few and far between. I had planned to attend one in London but when I saw that Infinson and gilliwig had organised one at Witchford near Ely, I planned my day around that.🤔
The day started with an hour’s drive in the dark up the M11 until I got to Duxford. My first cache of the day was the mystery Just-Us-Two overlooking the airfield at 0657. I then moved on down into the village for the FP and the VH trads.
Having ticked these off, I drove up into Cambs to Whittlesford where there was a plethora of series caches to keep me busy. I quickly sorted out the trad at the URC CM and then the multi at the VH. The LB and the WM trads were quickly found which brought me to the CM multi at St Mary and St Andrew. I found most of the information that I needed apart from a couple of numbers but I busked them and luckily spotted the well hidden cache at my coords. It was depressing but uplifting in a way to see the Allied War Graves of pilots and aircrew here from the Commonwealth and our other allies particularly Poland who were based down the road at RAF Duxford. RIP.
I finished my visit to the village with a quick find of the VS trad and the Congratulations BLACKCATS04 mystery. I then set off on a bit on a road trip. Not far out of town was the handy 3.5/1.5 View Over Sawston mystery and nearby to this was the Wherigo at Babraham (reverse cache). I was only going to take a bearing here but I got carried away and walked for a couple of miles to get the 2.5/3 beauty.😀
Next up was the VS trad and CM multi at Stapleford followed by the VS trad at Great Shelford. Unfortunately the ST at the nearby Shelford Station was MIA but I got back on track with the trads at the CM and VS in Trumpington. I briefly suffered the road works on the edge of Cambridge on the way to the clever trad A Step Up From Jungle Drums and the CM at St Philip before heading out to the relative quietness of Cherry Hinton.
This village had a plethora of caches and I picked up 2 Village Signs, 2 CMs, a WM and an RST but I could reallly have done with a cafe. However, a check of the watch told me that I had just enough time to drive up to Witchford for the event.
The event was surprisingly busy. I spotted the two hosts straight away but other cachers who I never met were coming up and saying my name. As I hadn’t advertised my attendance, I must be more famous than I thought.🤣🤣🤔 I met Poshrule and Hanoosh who I had heard of and then the CM royalty of Baghunter and 1cachefinder who had travelled down from Sleaford for the event. I ate my lunch with Greyfergies and Treeferns who were locals before chatting to other cachers whose names I cannot remember.🙁
When the event broke up and everyone departed, I swiftly walked down the road to pick up the trad CM and then drove up the road to solve the VS multi and then the mystery WM for RAF Witchford with its very fitting cache shown in the photo.
It was almost time for home. The nearby village of Stretham was on the way and there were a couple of caches there that I thought that I’d try for. However, on the way, I spotted what could only be an old railway station so quickly stopped for a look. I was very pleased to find that there was a RST here that I had missed but unfortunately it was a DNF for someone last time but I made short work of the well hidden trad.
In Stretham, I quickly found the well placed CM and the VS before deciding that I really had to do battle with the M11. However I managed to find time for the VS and CM trads as well as the multi WM in nearby Milton before finally hitting the road for good.
